Old Town Ronda, Spain

The Old Town of Ronda, known as La Ciudad, is the historical heart of the city, perched on the south side of the El Tajo gorge and characterized by its deep Moorish heritage and well-preserved medieval layout. Founded and fortified during the Roman era, La Ciudad reached its peak significance during the Islamic period, when it was known as Izna-Rand-Onda, an important regional capital and a stronghold protected by massive walls and gates like the Puerta de Almocobar. Following the Christian Reconquista in 1485, the area saw the construction of numerous churches, convents, and palatial residences, such as the Palacio de Mondragón and the Casa del Rey Moro, often incorporating Moorish architectural styles (Mudejar). Today, La Ciudad retains its quiet, atmospheric charm with narrow, cobbled streets, ancient defensive walls, and stunning views, offering a tangible journey through the centuries of Ronda’s complex history.
