Santa Barbara Courthouse
The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is an iconic landmark that was completed in 1929 after the previous courthouse was heavily damaged in the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake. Designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by architect William Mooser III, the courthouse was built to reflect the region’s Spanish heritage, featuring white stucco walls, red-tiled roofs, wrought-iron details, and lush gardens. The courthouse is known for its stunning architecture, including the clock tower (El Mirador – The Viewpoint), which offers panoramic views of the city and coastline. The interior boasts hand-painted murals, colorful tilework, and an ornate courtroom with a hand-painted ceiling. Listed as a National Historic Landmark, the courthouse remains an active government building while also serving as a major tourist attraction and event space. Its historic charm and artistic details make it one of Santa Barbara’s most celebrated architectural treasures.
