Romero Canyon

Romero Canyon is an excellent trailhead located in Montecito known for its versatile 6-to-7-mile loop that caters to hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners. The trail begins in a lush, shaded canyon floor filled with oak woodlands and a seasonal creek before climbing into the rugged chaparral of the Santa Ynez Mountains. As the path ascends toward East Camino Cielo, it offers expansive panoramic views of the Santa Barbara coastline and the Channel Islands, with the Romero Canyon Trail Bench serving as a popular midway resting point. The area provides a perfect blend of scenery and challenging elevation gain, making it one of the most frequented trails in the Los Padres National Forest.

  • Located 15 minutes by car from downtown Santa Barbara, parking around the trailhead with its own small dirt lot.
  • Excellent hiking, trail running, and mountain biking.
  • 6-7 mile loop with rocky covered terrain, and a large fire road.
  • Connector trails leading to Edison Way and up to Romero Saddle and Divide Peak Highway.

Words from the Photographer: Amazing to check out after a nice rain storm, plenty of water flowing with small waterfalls along about half of the trail loop.
