Gaviota Wind Tunnels

The Gaviota wind tunnels are a series of striking geological formations carved into the sandstone bluffs along the Gaviota coast, created over millennia by the relentless erosive force of wind and salt spray. Located just off the highway within Gaviota State Park, these hollowed-out caves and smooth, undulating passages offer a unique natural playground for hikers and photographers who enjoy the dramatic textures and shadows of the honeycombed rock. Reaching the tunnels involves a moderately steep climb that rewards visitors with spectacular, framed views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding Santa Ynez Mountains. The site is a favorite for those seeking a quick adventure that showcases the rugged, raw beauty of California’s coastal wilderness away from the more manicured beaches of the city.
