Heron in Deveruex Lagoon

Devereux Lagoon, often called Devereux Slough, is a vital 70-acre seasonal wetland that acts as a sanctuary for over 270 species of resident and migratory birds. The ecosystem is dominated by pickleweed salt marshes, which provide essential nesting grounds for the rare Belding’s savannah sparrow, while the adjacent sandy shores are a famous recovery site for the threatened western snowy plover. Birdwatchers frequently spot various waterfowl and wading birds such as cinnamon teals, buffleheads, great blue herons, and snowy egrets. Additionally, the lagoon serves as a crucial stopover for long-distance travelers like marbled godwits, willets, and black-necked stilts, making it one of the premier birding destinations in the Central Coast. Past the Lagoon and at Sand’s Beach is the Snowy Plover conservation area.
